Are you at risk of Diabetes?
Have you heard about The Department of Health's initiative in preventative medicine targeted at all 40 to 49 year olds who may be at risk of developing diabetes?
Diabetes is on the increase in Australia, and is a chronic disease affecting 1.7 million Australians. It is well known that if the lifestyle factors associated with developing diabetes are addressed early, then the disease is at least in part preventable along with other chronic diseases.
The Department of Health has developed a short questionnaire to be used as a risk assessment tool for diabetes (AUSDRISK) To download a copy go to http://www.letspreventdiabetes.org.au/take-the-test
We encourage you to fill out this risk assessment form and if you score more than 12 out of 20 then you are considered to be at intermediate to high risk of developing diabetes in the futureIf you find you are at risk of diabetes then the government is encouraging Australians to have a thorough health check in their 40's.
If you have scored more than 12 using AUSDRISK and would like to take advantage of this initiative please phone Blackwood Clinic on 8278 6666 to book an appointment with your doctor. Please advise the receptionist when booking that you will require a long appointment for the "Diabetes Risk Assessment Health Check" and allow approximately one hour of your time.
It is very important to bring the completed risk assessment form to your appointment.
Patients who hold a valid health care or pension card should bring this along to the appointment, as well as your current Medicare card to access bulk billing services. For all non concession card holders a nominal fee of $36 will be payable on the day for this health check.
Please speak with our friendly reception or nursing staff for further information.
Aged between 45-49 years old?
As we get older, many of us become more vulnerable to illness. The federal government has recognised this and has introduced a health check for everyone aged between 45 and 49 who may be at risk of developing a health complaint, like Diabetes or Heart problems.
The aim of the health check is to help find, prevent or lessen the effect of the disease-it is better to avoid disease than to treat it. This health check will give us the opportunity to look at your lifestyle and medical/family history to find out if you are at risk.
The health check would involve:
updating your medical history and looking at your health issues doing tests, if required follow up of any problems identified advice and information, for example on how to make lifestyle changes to improve your health
If you are aged 45-49 and you also have a 'risk factor', meaning anything that increases your chance of developing a disease, then you are entitled to a health check. Risk factors include:
.High blood pressure
Lack of physical activity
Poor diet High cholesterol
Family history of disease (eg.Cancer/Heart Disease/Diabetes)
Patients that hold a valid Medicare Card and Health Care or Pension card will be able to access bulk billing for this service. For all non concession card holders a nominal fee of $36 is payable at the time of the health check. Also, if you have any friends or family members that would be entitled, talk to them about it and encourage them to visit their usual Doctor.
If you wish to take advantage of this health check please advise our friendly reception staff when making the appointment that it is for the "45-49 year old health check" so they may allow the correct amount of time for your appointment.
